Member: Shad L. Morris DMD

Dr. Morris began observing the toll that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was taking on the oral health of his patients. In particular a friend and dental patient whom he treated suddenly passed away in his sleep from obstructive sleep Apnea one night due to not wearing his CPAP.

Dr. Morris decided he wanted to help save lives through treating OSA. In taking many continuing education courses on OSA, along with the trained staff, Premier Sleep Solutions is now saving lives daily. His involvement in sleep medicine turned from primarily screening for sleep apnea to now having very close relationships with sleep physicians and allied health professionals in the community in treating this disease.

Member: Jason R Doucette, DMD

Dr. Doucette is a Nevada native that was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. Further pursuing his education in 1991, Dr. Doucette ventured north to Reno where he attended the University of Nevada, Reno and received his bachelor’s degree of science in 1995. He then attended Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine in 1999. Due to his love for the mountains and the great outdoors, Dr. Doucette returned to Reno shortly after to begin his career in dentistry.

After his first few years in practice and countless hours of continuing education, Dr. Doucette developed a passion for cosmetic dentistry and began to focus on smile revitalization through the use of technologically advanced surgical/restorative cosmetic dental procedures. In 2009 after surgically placing dental implants for nearly ten years, Dr. Doucette successfully expanded his focus to the planning and placement of fixed-full-arch-implant-supported-prosthetics via CT-Guided technology when multiple implants were indicated to restore a smile. Furthermore, as a result of Dr. Doucette’s extensive training and background in comprehensive dentistry over the last eighteen years, coupled with his concern for every individual’s overall health, Dr. Doucette has become acutely aware of the vital role that efficient sleep plays in the optimal health and healing of his patients. Therefore in recent years, Dr. Doucette has become very passionate about heavily screening and treating all of his patients for sleep breathing disorders such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Doucette continues to pursue excellence while remaining on the cutting-edge of dental and sleep health technology.

Member: Dr. Barry Freydberg DDS

Dr. Freyberg a 1968 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Dentistry was a full time practicing general dentist, until recently, where he now spends much of his chair-side time practicing dental sleep medicine in Illinois and Arizona. He says “In my senior practice years, sleep medicine is new and fascinating, physically much easier than general dentistry and more rewarding. We are now also saving lives-in addition to dentitions. And, chairside, it is much less stressful and more lucrative.”

Dr. Freydberg was named University of Illinois “Alumni of the Year” in 2004. Additionally, he was the 2002 Program Chairman for the Chicago Dental Society Mid-Winter Meeting, which drew over 40,000 attendees.

In 2007, Dr. Gordon Christensen appointed Dr. Freydberg as the Director of Technology at the new Scottsdale Center for Dentistry, at the time he was the head of educational programs. In February 2009, the Chicago Dental Society awarded Dr. Freydberg the Gordon Christensen Lecture Recognition Award for his outstanding teaching contributions over the years.

And, He was also a consultant to the ADA Council on Dental Practice for more than a decade.

He has been recognized as the “grandfather of dental technology”, having lectured on dental computers and technology since 1980. He consulted with all the major technology companies in dentistry.

He is also leading speaker on conservative “Prepless” esthetic dentistry and is considered a pioneer in raising dentists’ awareness of the ever-growing link between high technology and practice and clinical management.

“Practicing Dental Sleep Medicine is a joy. And I can’t wait to share stories and videos of patients, who attribute sleep dentists for not just saving their lives, but having discovered the source of many of their medical problems, when their physicians only treated their illnesses.”

Dr. Freydberg looks forward to enjoying even longer relationships with his patient friends as well as with the new ones he will meet through his passion for teaching.

Education Committee

Committee Chair: Kevin Mueller, DMD

Dr. Mueller was born and raised in Granite City Illinois. He grew up loving baseball and went on to become the starting shortstop at Trinity University in San Antonio. His passion for baseball took him as far as playing semi-pro ball where the pro scouts were in regular attendance. But pro ball was not meant to be due to a career ending injury in his senior year. One chapter closes and another one opens.

In 1980, Kevin Mueller earned his doctorate in medical dentistry (DMD) in East St. Louis Illinois where now Dr. Mueller also performed his general practice residency.

While on vacation to Arizona in 1982, Dr. Mueller fell in love its unique beauty and decided to start a new life, a family and his own practice (named Paseo Dental) here in Glendale Arizona.

Heeding the call to “go (further) west young man”, Dr. Mueller sold his practice in Glendale and moved to California. But Arizona drew him back in 2004, which is when he opened Arizona Smile Design.

Dr. Mueller has a passion for excellence in everything he does. His sports interests are now golf where he has enjoyed as low as a three handicap and he has become an accomplished ballroom dancer, where he has also competed routinely over the years.

Dr. Mueller’s passion for dentistry has only grown stronger as the science around it has grown. The latest technologies encourage dentists to look beyond the condition of the cavity and wear and see its ultimate cause. Today’s brave new world of new technology reaches far beyond what yesterday’s dentist could have ever imagined. The teeth and many seemingly unrelated physical challenges stem from what happens when we sleep.

Committee Vice Chair: Jerry Hu, DDS

Dr. Hu, grew up in Soldotna, Alaska, the heart of the Kenai Peninsula and home of the world record King Salmon. He graduated from Soldotna high School in 1991, earning abundant local, state and national scholarships and was also admitted to a very competitive dual-degree program, called the “Preferred Admissions Program” at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He knew he wanted to become a dentist ever since middle school, and being admitted to this vigorous program, he was able to attain both his bachelor’s and doctorate degree at age 24. While at Michigan Dental School, Dr. Hu earned research recognition and awards, for his study, “Searching for practical methods to monitor Streptococcus mutans levels” under Dr. Walter J. Loesche, former President of the International Academy of Dental Research (IADR) and American Academy of Dental Research (AADR).

Dr. Hu is married to “Sharon” Yi Hui Hu and they have three children together, Walter T. Hu, William S. Hu, and Warren A. Hu. Sharon is from Taiwan, and loves the Kenai Peninsula. This community has embraced her, and she loves being an Alaskan. Dr. Hu is a true Alaskan at heart. He loves everything about Alaska, from hiking the mountains and fishing the rivers, to biking the great outdoors and participating in winter sporting events. Dr. Hu has also obtained his black belt in Karate from Okamotos (Jinen Ryu style Karate). As Dr. Hu feels his identity is “Alaskan”, he returned home right after graduation to practice dentistry in 1998, taking over a locally well known and highly respected practice– that of Dr. Calvin Fair’s.

Currently, Dr. Hu is dedicated to providing exceptional dentistry in Anchorage and Soldotna. Over the years, Dr. Hu has attained extensive training at the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, International Congress of Oral Implantologists, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI). He has earned many Fellowships and Masterships (see credentials) and has published numerous articles with his research in cosmetic dentistry and dental sleep apnea treatment. In 2017, he became the first full time dentist in Alaska to earn Board certification for Dental Sleep Medicine as a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. He also has been lecturing over the years at national conferences from Arizona to Texas, Hawaii to Seattle, and even Canada. He thoroughly enjoys changing the lives of his clients through new smiles– designed and fashioned by nationally recognized and award winning MACVEENERS MACStudio team. In addition to applying both artistic and scientific principles to his work, his profound passion is to help make life changing dentistry. Dr. Hu has also been invited to speak at future conferences. With many published articles in dental publications pertaining to cosmetic dentistry and dental sleep medicine, Dr. Hu is also currently continuing his clinical research in those fields.

These efforts culminated in his becoming the first Dentist to be granted board certification in Dental Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. His growing interest in the Sleep/Pain connection prompted him to enroll with his alma mater, Tufts University, in post-graduate study of fibromyalgia which he continued for two years. Following his completion of this research, he was also awarded Board Qualification by the American Board of Orofacial Pain.

As Past President, and now Vice President of the Wisconsin Sleep Society, Dr. Taché says, “My goal is to advance understanding of the correlation between sleep disturbance and orofacial pain. Based in Hollywood, Florida, and established in 2005, SGS focuses primarily on dental treatment of snoring and sleep apnea. Rapid growth within SGS and the dental sleep medicine industry has been spurred by the fact that over $4 Billion is spent annually to treat sleep apnea with therapies that are largely unsuccessful and have managed to cumulatively treat less than 1% of the affected patients over the past 20 years. More and more physicians and dentists are seeking out SGS for their sleep needs.

Today, Sleep Group Solutions stands alone as the only provider of a complete suite of solutions. Starting with over 80 continuing education courses and in-office training, screening, diagnostic and treatment instrumentation. With over 50 Million people in North America suffering with sleep apnea and less than 0.5% of the dentists currently trained and equipped to offer assistance, we can expect to see continued growth of this field over the next decade. By offering every piece of the education, screening, diagnosis and treatment puzzle, SGS provides a unique position to capitalize on this tremendous growth.
